Workshops and Demonstrations

Coming to a Town Near You?

Lee and Skip can share their smelting expertise in several ways. Most of their teaching utilizes the Coated Tyle Furnace, a bloomery built of readily available, inexpensive materials that is capable of producing 20 to 50 lb blooms.

Demonstrations: For single day events. During quiet moments of the 6-7 hour smelting process, Lee and Skip can give a basic description of the bloomery process, give instructions for furnace-building, give a little hands-on experience, and answer myriad questions. Cost begins at $700 plus travel expenses.

Workshops: For 2-3 day events. On the first day, workshop participants build a Coated Tyle Furnace, prepare their ore and charcoal, and help with a demonstration smelt. On the next day, they smelt their own iron in the furnaces they have built. Cost begins at $1500, plus material and travel expenses.
