Sculpture from Bloom Iron

Nyamakala 9: Gash
Photo: Ellen Martin

Lee has been forging iron sculpture for over three decades. He is most widely known for his sculpture forged from iron he has mined and smelted himself, using the three thousand year old bloomery smelting process.

Bloomery smelting was man’s first method for winning the metal from it’s ore. By exploring this lost technology, Lee feels he has been able to connect his art to the inherent organic character of iron, to the traditions of our ancestors, and to the earth, with increasing depth and power.

For an excellent introduction to Lee’s work, see Anna Fariello’s article from Metalsmith magazine. For available sculpture and prices, click on the photo galleries at left. Other work may also be seen at America’s Arts.
