Bloom Iron for Sale

Fresh From the Furnace

Raw Blooms
$22.00 per lb, plus shipping.
Whole blooms can range from 18 - 45 lb. Half blooms are recommended, as they are much easier to reheat, and even the simple splitting of the bloom begins the consolidation process.

Anconies (Consolidated Blooms)
$32.00 per lb, plus shipping
We recommend this form of bloom, at least for your first purchase. The forged section provides a convenient handle, as well as a properly consolidated piece for comparison as you work the rough end. The initial consolidation and expulsion of the slag makes the ancony much easier to heat than the raw bloom. This work also gives Lee a better chance to judge the quality of the iron than simple splitting does.

The anconies shown range from 4 to 12 lbs. The increased cost of the iron reflects not only the forging labor, but the 25% to 40% loss of iron and slag in the initial forging.

More than Just Commerce
We're asking you to participate in our research. We still have a lot to learn about how the myriad variables of bloomery smelting affect the quality of the final product. So we'll include a questionnaire with your purchase that we ask you to return, so that we can correlate your forging experience with our notes from that particular smelt.

How To Order
Contact Lee by email or by phone, during regularish business hours. He'll need to know what size piece you need, and what you plan to do with it to try and select (or smelt to order) a bloom to suit your needs.
